Kathleen Chandler (Parrish)

I am so sorry to read about Gene's death.  I felt so happy when he reached out to class members with his story and happy that he came to the luncheon to frankly say goodbye.  I wish his family the best and will always have good memories of Gene.  Kathleen Parrish

UPDATE ON GENE DRESSEN:

Apparently the cause of death was a delayed reaction to the bee sting which caused a massive heart attack.

                                                      60TH  REUNION UPDATE

We have had a good response to the reunion, with reservations still trickling in.  If you haven't mailed yours in, please do so NOW as we have to place the food order.

Steve Millward volunteered to furnish his sound system and he is putting together some "golden oldies" for background music.  Thanks Steve.

After lunch is served and the clean up done, we will have some entertainment (around 3 ish)

1)  Steve Millward and his Sons will do a few songs on the steel drums

2)  Dan Collins will do some Cowboy Poetry (he is sooo good you will think your're listening to        Baxter Black).

3)  Steve Streeper no longer plays the banjo because of his arthritis, but he still makes world class banjos.  If he is able to attend, he will bring a banjo for us to admire.

HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE REUNION

Hi,  A couple of announcements:

1.  Rita Haggardt talked to someone from another class who just had a reunion and they told Rita that they had leftover paint from painting the big rock in front of Poky High and would be willing to give it to her.  If you are interested in painting the rock for 'The Class of 61' the morning of the reunion please call Karen Halford to let her know.  Karen's phone number is 208-521-9181.

2.  Prime Time Auctions in Pocatello is auctioning off Poky High memorabilia, including tee shirts, cheerleading costumes, year books, pictures, art work, signs, jerseys etc.  The auction ends on 9/11/21.  If you are interested in any of these items just google Prime Time Auctions in Pocatello and select the auction ending on 9/11/21.  Items are on pages 8, 9 and 10.  Merchandise with the Indian head would be obsolete (collectable?) as they have changed the mascot for Poky.   FYI

Obituary

Trudy Marie Dretke Haeg.   If you knew her you'll never forget her.  Creative, innovative, compassionate, witty, intelligent, assertive, outgoing, articulate, epethetic, with a fiesty demeanor.

Trudy Marie Haeg beloved wife, mother, sister and friend passed away at her home in Mackay, Idaho on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

She is survived by her husband and partner of 42 years, Jeff Higley, her son Todd Haeg and his wife Siobhan Reynolds of Boise, her two sisters JoAnn Dieffenbach of Star, ID, and Meri Lou (Brad) Prescott of Parker, Co.

Trudy was born in Pocatello, ID on March 24, 1943, to Arthur William and Georgina (White) Dretke.  She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1961.  She married Thomas Haeg in 1962 and later divorced.  They had a son, Todd.

She attended the Unverty of Idaho and then ISU where she graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Art Degree in French and Spanish.  She began teaching French in the Pocatello School System while continuing her education at ISU.  She graduated in 1970 from ISU with a Master of Art Degree in English.  She taught English Literature at ISU andl moved for a time with Todd, to Des Moines, IA to teach English Literature at Drake University.  She returned to Poocaatello to continue teaching where she periodically taught troubled children, a role she found particularly rewarding  She was immensely proud of her French language students at Franklin Junior High for winning several state competitions and trophies.

As her career progressed she raised Todd as a single mother.  She took great pride watching him graduate from college with an Aerospace Engineering degree, become a Naval Aviator, Helicopter Pilot, and evetually retire as a Commander in the US Navy.

In 1978, Trudy changed careers, and began working at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) at the INEL.  It was there she met her future husband Jeff.  At the time she was a Recruiter in the Human Resource Department, traveling all over the country to recruit professionals and engineers  Concurrently, she created and taught a course in technical writing and professional development for management staff.  She enjoyed organizing company Christmas parties, summer picnics and golf tournaments.  Later in her career, she became one of the first female managers at NRF, taking a position in the Administrative Services Organization.

In 1990, Trudy and Jeff left NRF for positions at the Rocky Flats Plant in Colorado near Boulder.  Trudy worked there as an Occurrence Reporting Manager, retiring in 1998.

Trudy and Jeff returned to Idaho in 2000 where they built a house north of Mackay with views of Mt.Borah.  Trudy loved designing the house and overseeing the construction.  She kept busy taking care of Jeff, the house and the rest of the "estate" and her dog and cats.

In 2002 Trudy suffered a brain aneurysm while at home.  She survived and recovered, but it made life challenging  She met those challenges with the same grit she had displayed her entire life.  She and Jeff were very thankful for the care she received over the years from the medical professionals in Mackay, Arco, Idaho Falls and Pocatello.  They saved her life more than once and took great care of her.

Trudy was a prolific reader who enjoyed learning, teaching languages and writing.  She enjoyed all types of music from the Eagles to Rachmaninov, and Elvis to Led Zeppelin..  She also liked singing and played the piano.  She loved animals and the dog and cats she had throughout her life.  She enjoyed travel, having visited destinations all over the US and many locations in Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico.

Her family is thanful to have had Trudy in their lives this long and Jeff will never forget that she made him at least twice the man he was when he met her.

The family will have a memorial get together on Tuesday, September 28th in Pocatello at the Sandpiper Restaurant from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  We would like to invite anyone who remembers Trudy to stop by and share a memory.

Please give to your local animal shelter in lieu of a gift, flowers or remembrance.

RIP Trudy

                                 60th CLASS REUNION

Our 60th class reunion will be etched in my memory bank as a weekend filled with laughter, memories, visiting, reminiscing, good food and great entertainment, all on beautiful September days.

A big thank you to all who attended, we had 103 to the picnic and 17 at the Sunday breakfast.  A special thank you to Dan Collins and Steve Millward and Sons for the outstanding entertainment.

We were all raised by "The Greatest Generation" and I wholeheartedly believe that their virtues of integrity, dependability, honesty and good work ethics were passed on to our generation.

When Karen Halford and I talked about having a reunion, the available venues and dates were limited due to Covid.  One day I decided that if I divided the duties and delegated that we could pull it off.  What I didn't factor in was having my hip remodeled and spending most of the Summer limping around on a walker, but life happens.  This life interruption just made me really appreciate the above mentioned virtues of our classmates.  Without having any additional meetings, each Chairman followed through on their commitment and the reunion ran as smooth as room temperature butter.  A BIG thank you to the following Chairmen.

Karen Twitchell Halford

Jackie Taylor Voyles

Rita Demopoulos Haggardt

Cheri Honas

Stan Zweigart

Lynda Knudsen Woodworth

Kerry Johnson

Roma Jenks Hurley with helpers Marsha (nee Tripp) and Lynn Buck, and Kathleen Chandler Parrish

Karen Jensen Ruchti

P.S.  I posted 8 reunion photos, they are under the 50th reunion gallery.  If you click on each photo, I've identified as many as I can.  Still trying to figure out how to move them to a 60th reunion gallery (I don't think this photo function is a very user friendly program).  I'm mad at myself for not taking more photos but got busy visiting and forgot.  I invite others to share your reunion experience and any photos if you have them.  Thanks.

Gary Glenisky Class Of 62

Budd Kendrick, Class of '62, posed the following question on the Class of '62 website after quoting Thomas Wolfe (not the Thomas Wolfe in your class).   Since our two classes were so close together, I thought some of you might like the answer I gave to Budd.  And I will go further and ask again, ..... What do any of you think?

"You never can go back home, because while it is the same place, the world has changed."  Thomas Wolfe   Not everyone agrees with Thomas Wolfe.  What do you think?

I agree with Thomas Wolfe.  You can never go back to your home town as it was because that home town probably has changed a lot. That home town you grew up in is mostly in memories; only in your heart.  Just think about the many things that used to exist in that home town that are gone.

The picture below was taken at the viewing and reception for Dave Underwood on Friday, September 17, 2021.  Before the picture was taken, Stan Zweigart and Karen LaChance Hartford had been there.  After the picture was taken classmate Tony Francis (Dave's Ex) came to our table to visit.

Sitting L to R Val and Dale Davis, RaNae Green Palmer, Karen Twitchell Halford and Roma Jenks Hurley.

Standing L to R Rita Demopoulos Haggardt, Jared Underwood (Dave's son) Lynda Knudsen Woodworth and Ron Woodworth.

The following quote was on the back of Dave's funeral program.  I had never seen it and thought it beautiful, so will share it here.

"For what is it to die to stand naked in the

wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is it to cease breathing, but to free

the breath from its restless tide, that it may

rise and expand and seek God

          unencumbered?

Only when you have reached the mountain

top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs,

     then shall you truly dance."

Kahlil Gibran

In response to Gary Glenisky's above post about "you can never go back home". I had never given it much thought as I have never left home. Reading your list of businesses and locations brought back a lot of memories and I could add quite a few more.  I smiled as I read 'The Owl Club' as my husband used to own that dive.  I agree with Thomas Wolfe, as things do change.  At the same time, I think of home as more the people than the locations and sadly that also changes.

The last ten years that I worked, as an Intelligence Analyst for the FBI, I traveled most of the time.  Changes or not I was always glad to get home.  I think we live in the best location and  I'm glad to call Poky home.

P.S.  On a personal note, Gary, is Grace Glenisky your mother?

Above photo of Mary Ann McBride Tatum

Thanks Jerry Lowe for advising of Mary Ann's passing.  I was saddened to hear this as she used to live up the street from me and we worked together at the railroad.

OBITUARY FOR MARY ANN McBRIDE TATUM

Mary Ann Tatum (nee McBride) died unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep, a good book next to her in bed on May 23, 2021.  We are certain she is now back with her beloved soulmate, Howard Tatum.

Born in  Long Beach, CA in 1943, she grew up in Kingfisher, OK, then Pocatelo, ID.  Mary Ann lived life fully and joyfully as a mother, sister, aunt, colleague, and friend.  She raised two beautiful daughters Michelle (Barry) and Marielle with her first husband Michael Raidy   She took great joy in cooking, crafting, gardening, singing, sailing anD skiing with them as they grew.  She experienced true heartache when Marielle passed in 2002.

Mary Ann launched her long career by leaving Idaho to work in San Francisco for Kelly Girls.  Returning to Idaho she worked for a law firm which set her on the path that led to a management position with the Union Pacific Railroad.  She overcame multiple hurtles during her time there, including completing her MBA at night, while working full time and being the primary caregiver to two little girls (modeling for them the importance of education and persistence); overcoming the barriers inherent in a male dominated workplace, includindg filing an EOC complaint, which ultimately demonstrated her determination to succeed and eventually leaving Idaho for Kansas City, and then Denver to make the moves necessary for career advancement.  She was able to retire early due to her hard work and determination , which allowed her to more fully enjoy the next phase of her life.

She met the love of her life, Howard Tatum, later in life and jumped right in knowing that you never know how much time you will get with someone.  Because of Howardd, she was blessed with a bonus family of his 7 grown children in Hawaii, who she loved as her own.  She and Howard traveled frequently from Colorado and later Madrana, AZ to spend plenty of time with them and their many grandchildren and great grand children.  With Howard she was able to enjoy some of her true passions in life: golfing, good food, friends, but most of all, travel.  She was a Vagabond at heart, and they created a bucket list of places to visit all over the world and ticked them off one by one.  When that was done, they created a second list and were working those off when Howard passed away in 2016.  They saw the world.

She was very active in their community of the Highlands at Dove Mountain, including choir, water sports - aerobics, walking and volleyball, sewing, concerts, and exploring Tucson with the Sassy Saguaro sisters.  She was actively interested and involved in politics and social justice issues.  Though she missed Howard terribly, Mary Ann continued to find meaning in those activities, as well as traveling to visit her daughter Michelle and son-in-law Phil, in Minnesota, as well as Howard's children in Hawaii.

She was deeply committed to her work with Rotary International.  She and Howard were charter members of Dove Mountain Rotary club and she took greaat pride in the many service projects and scholorships sponsored by their club as well as working closely with the High School Interact club.

Mary Ann was a voracious reader, enjoying sharing a good meal and a cold glass of wine, singing and dancing like no one was watching, beautiful music of all kinds, laughing hard and often, a perfect martini, and time with friends and family.  Her love, her smile, and her joy will be missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Danny, daughter MarIelle and her son Joey, husband Howard and her sister Kathleen.  She is survived by her brother Richard McBride, daughter Michelle and sone-in-law Phil Barry: her grandchildren, Christopher and Brianna Raidy stepchildren Genevieve, Barbara, Anita, Mona, Laura, Donna and David, as well as their many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews Terri, Keally, Zach and Jessica.

Funeral Mass wil be held at 10:00 AM, July 20th at Our Lady of the Desert Parrish, 7101 W Picture Rocks Rd, Tucson, AZ 85743.  Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 PM at the Highlands at Dove Mountain.

Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Dove Mountain Rotary Charitable Fund - Howard and Mary Ann Tatum Scholorship Fund, P.O. Box 69085, Oro Valley, AZ 85737, or dovemountainrotaryorg.2) Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona 11734 W Grier Rd, Marana, AZ 85653.communityfoodbank.org.

Bill Scott obituary

William (Bill) Patrick Scott was born January 10th, 1944 in Pocatello, Idaho and passed away June 26th, 2020 in Austin, Texas following complications from a stroke he had in December 2019.

Growing up, he practiced farming and raised and trained quarter horses with his parents, Paul and Freda Scott for the Flying U Rodeo.  After high school, he was a U.S. Senate page for a summer before attending Carleton College in Minnesota, where he was Student Body President both his Junior and Senior years.  Bill moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas where he both taught and earned his Masters degree in Radio/Television/Film.  He then moved to Los Angeles and was accepted into the Director's Training Program, and worked with the American Film Intitute.  Bill worked for several decades in film and television as an Assistant Director, Production Manager, Associate Ptoducer, and Line Producer on many projects including:  Carrie, Hooper, Ned Blessing, Badlands, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Phantom of the Paradise, Carny, The Faculty, Spy Kids 1, 2, 3, and 4, Sin City, Grindhouse, Predator, Machete Kills, The Buddy Holly Story, Big Wednesday, The Toy, Windy City, Just One of the Guys, The Last of the Finest, The Good Old Boy, Final Justice, and so many more.

After dating on and off for 13 years, Bill and Barbara Lambertson Scott finally married on a beautiful yacht in Marina Del Ray, CA. and welcomed their only child, Molly in 1987.  She was the apple of his eye and he loved her dearly.  In the early 90's they returned to Austin and Molly eventually followed him into the film industry, where they worked on several movies together.

Bill was an avid fly fisherman, passionate reader and historian, and loving husband and father.  He was known for his fair and pragmatic nature, steadfast kindness, dry humor, and sharp wit, and will always be remembered for the love he had for his office staff, crew and his teamsters and, of course, for the poster that quickly became his catch phrase - " I AM smiling"

A good picture of Bill is on the funeral home website.
