I don't recall when, where, or more curiously, why I met Vern.

I was a sports addict, playing with any shape and size of ball I saw.  He was, in present day terminology, a geek - he read, studied and was on the debate team, whatever that was.  I fantasized about girls, he about good grades.   I went to church so I could get into the gymnasium, he actually knew about religion.  But, somehow we linked up, likely through common friends, but as I have come to realize, it was our mutual fixation with music and humor that brought us together.  I was into Elvis, the Diamonds, Buddy Holly.  He had albums of the Kingston Trio, Dave Brubeck and Dylan.  I was good at knock-knock.  His jokes were witty, dry and sarcastic.

Throughout high school, and later, Idaho State, we spent a great deal of time together, even becoming roommates in college, sharing our hopes, trials (once literally), successes and failures - typically with humor, music and, sometimes, Black Label.  As I came to know and understand him, I learned his of his talents, insecurities, visions and his attempts to break from his perceived family constraints.  At ISU, he became a Russian major, taking language, history and philosophy classes, becoming an Idaho Maynard G. Krebs, both in thought and dress which personified his individuality.

We lost touch with each other after graduation, marriage and our travels, becoming reunited at PHS reunions with the opportunity to listen to his new music interest and laugh our asses off again.  His life was way too short and I miss his intellect, humor and the insight he gave me to look beyond the immaterial.  He was a great friend.

Dasvidonia, my chubby comrade.....
