Classmate Steven Delorr Farnsworth passed away on February 21, 2019.  Obituary states his wife Lanette Barker, also a classmate, preceded him in death.  Will try to get her information to update our  "In Memory" section.  Obituary follows:

"Steven Delorr Farnsworth, 76, died peacefully, February 21, 2019, following a short battle with stomach cancer.  Dad was born on July 28, 1942 to John and Jennie Farnsworth.  He was the oldest of 4 boys.

He grew up in Pocatello and went to grade school at the high school annex, Walshington, Green Acres, Franklin middle school and Pocatello High School.  Dad wrestled at Franklin middle schol and was good at it.  While attending Poky, Dad broke his neck jumping on the trampoline.  He had to wear a half body cast for 6 months.  He grew 2 inches during that time.  It was also at Poky that he met the love of his life, Lanette Barker.  They graduated together and were married on December 27, 1961.  

Dad joined th Navy in 1962 and was stationed in San Diego, Calif.  He would go out to sea for months at a time.  It was while serving that he learned how to cook and it became a life long love of his.  After being honorably discharged, he went to work for Challenge, then on to Boise Cascade, Anderson Lumber and Lamb Weston.  Mon and Dad opened their own bakery called The Bread Basket Bakery.  The would make delicious donuts and rolls and delivered them to many businesses throughout the city.  People refered to Dad as "the donut man".  They retired from the bakery in 2008.  Dad loved to fish and would always have a pole ready to go.  Dad was a big and friendly man.  He knew people everywhere he went.  If you weren't a friend, he hadn't met you yet.  Bill Jolley has been his best friend his whole life.

He is survived by 4 children, Lauree (Mike) Snooks, Kay Wulf, Kelli Farnsworth, Steve (Kerrie) Farnsworth, 3 brothers, Keith ("Cheryl), Galen (Kathy) and Kenny Farnsworth.  10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 2 beloved cats, Missy and Mittons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lanette, his daughter, Deana and his parents, John and Jennie Farnsworth.  No services are planned at this time."

Clasmate Lanette Barker Farnsworth was born on March 14, 1943 and passed away peacefully at her home in Pocatello on February 22, 2016.  Lanette married classmate Steven Farnsworth.  She was buried in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello, Idaho.

Classmate  "Madeline "Sammie" Hill Steely 76, of Pocatello was born on March 7th, 1943 in Pocatello and passed away on March 17, 2019 in Pocatello.  She attended Emerson Elementary School, Irving Junior High and Pocatelo High School.  Madeline spent her 34 year career as a Bartender/Cocktail waitress in Pocatello, where she worked at the Ginza bar, The Spaghetti Mill, The Bannock Hotel, The Grand Saloon, the Center Street Clubhouse, the Elks Lodge and finished her lengthy career at Fitzgerald's Casino in Reno, Nevada.  She met the love of her life Charles "Chuck" Steely while working at the Elks Lodge.  She is survived by her spouse Chuck, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  

There will be a celebration of life being held at Cornelison Funeral Home located at 431 N. 15th Ave, Pocatello on Saturday the 30th of March 2019 at 2pm, and we will be having a gathering to continue the celebration at the Elks Lodge at 410 S Main St., Pocatello.  We ask everyone to join us at this wonderful celebration of our Mother and please remember this is a "Celebration", Mon wants everyone to be smiling and laughing like she always did.  Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com.  208-232-0542."

Following is obituary for classmate Linda May (Newsom) Merrill:   "Age 75, daughter of Earmal and Elnora May Newsom born in Pocatello, Idaho, fought a valiant and courageous fight with Parkinsons and FINALLY got to go home to God's loving embrace February 23, 2019, exactly at midnight.

Her love and determination set an exceptional example for her three living children to follow:  Russ (Linda) Lewis, Connie (Bob) Sistrunk, and Shannon McNeal along with 7 granddaughters 8 greatgrandsons, and one great granddaughter.  She is also survived by her brother, Blaine (Terry) Newsom and sister Sandra (Jim) McKinley, and sister in spirit and best friend Pat Bailey.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Merrill, and her brother, Wade Newsom.  She was an avid reader, a fisherwoman and loved to help people and make them laugh and smile!  Honoring her wishes, her remains will be cremated through Downard Funeral Home, and no public services will be held.

The family wishes to thank the exceptional nurses, CNAs, housekeeper's and staff at Gateway Transitional Care Center (her second family) and Dr.Nielsen, nurses, minister and social workers at Encompass Hospice.  Your kindness, hugs, and love given was and is truly appreciated."

Classmate Karen LaChance Hartford's husband Bill passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019.  She will meet with family and friends at Cornelison Funeral Home on Thursday, April 11th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.  They will proceed to the cemetary for a couple of prayers, then to St. Anthony Church (approx 1:30pm) for a luncheon.

Classmate Richard "Dick" LeRoy Patchett was born on July 28, 1942 and passed away at home on May 29, 2019.  Dick attended Pocatello schools and worked most of his career as a Brakeman for the UPRR.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, motorcycles and writing/playing gospel music.  He married classmate Francy Marie Paul on December 24, 1976.

He is survived by his wife, 2 children and 2 step-children.  A celebration of Dick's life will be at his home at 2757 South Old Highway 91 Inkiom, Idaho from 3 to 5 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2019.

Classmate Sharon Wilde Marler passed away on Friday June 7th.  When service information is posted I will share.  I received a call this morning from Orvid Christensen, and he is going to send a spray of flowers from the Class of 61, spending $100 to $125. I told Orvid I would like to go in on it.  If anyone else would like to contribute, you could send a check for 5 or 10 to me (Orvid still works as a long haul trucker, and is seldon home) or could give to me at the next luncheon, and I will get it to Orvid.  This is stictly VOLUNTARY.

SHARON KAY (WILDE) MARLER:  February 6, 1943 - June 8, 2019 (Age 76)

Sharon Kay Wilde Marler, 76, of St. Anthony, Idaho, passed away June 8, 2019, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Sharon was born February 6, 1943, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Leonard Wilde and Bernice Belnap Wilde.  She grew up and attended schools in the area and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1961.

On June 1, 1963, she married Richard "Dick" Marler in Idaho Falls, Idaho.  They had two daughters Leisl and Melissa.  Sharon was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, published two books, and worked as a secretary for the Juvenile Correction Center in St. Anthony.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Sharon was involved with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and was selected as a Yoplait Champion, an honor given to women and men doing extraordinary things in their local communities to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Sharon is survived by her loving husband Richard "Dick" Marler of St. Anthony, ID; daughter, Leisl (Brian) Bonell of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter, Melissa Marler of Sacramento, CA; sister, Lenice Egbert of Chubbuck and brother Ronald Wilde of Grand Junction, CO; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of sending flowers, please make a donation in her name to the American Cancer Association.

Classmate David L. Andersen called to say his twin sister, Karen Andersen Thorsted passed away on January 3rd.  This is her obituary as posted by Gillies Funeral Chapel in Brigham City, UT.
 

"Our loving wife, mother and grandmother, Karen Dee (Andersen) Thorsted, 75, returned home to her son and parents on January 3, 2019.  Karen was born along with a twin brother on July 24, 1943 in Pocatello, Idaho to Ervin Lavern and Dorothy (Roberts) Andersen.

Karen graduated from Pocatello High School, then attended Weber State University.  Karen married Lloyd Dale Thorsted on May 3, 1963 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple.  Karen loved to bake and sew for her family.  Karen loved to play games with her family and brought much laughter and fun into her home.  Karen was a wonderful friend to many and was a great example to her family through her service and faith.

Karen is survived by her husband Lloyd, Tremonton, Michelle (Michael) Beach, Virginia; Dona (Thomas) Connor, Washington; Stephanie (Cavin) Hill, Texas; Robert (Robyn) Thorsted, Honeyville; Troy (Shelly) Thorsted, Tremonton; 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Four brothers, David (Pat) Andersen, Logan; William (Lois) Andersen, Arizona; Larry Andersen, Logan and Kevin (Cheryl) Andersen, Idaho; one sister Julienne (Mark) Wasem, North Dakota.

Karen was preceded in death by one son, Brandon; a sister Janice; and her parents and a sister in law, Tammy Andersen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Tremonton Stake Center, 660 N 300 E, Tremonton.  A viewing will be held at Gillies Funeral Chapel Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 6-8pm.  There will be a short viewing before the funeral from 10-10:40 am at the Tremonton church.  Interment will be in the Honeyville Cemetary."

I would like to encourage all classmates to use this site more, post special events in your life (maybe a wedding, new grandbabies, memorable trips, etc.), post about other classmates (with their permission) etc.  While we need to remember those who have passed away, we also need to celebrate and share the living.  

Since we just celebrated our country's birthday, I found this post by classmate Steven Streeper very worthwhile.  I am sharing it, with his permission.  It gives us a glimps into a memorable moment in Steven's life.

I stand by what I said back then.  In addition, I am very concerned that many Americans no longer believe in God.  I firmly believe that the men who created this country were inspired by God... PERIOD!  The Constitution is an inspired document, not to be changed by every social whim.  I believe that the blessings we enjoy come from God, not the government.  If we lose our freedom OF religion (not freedom FROM religion), we're in dire straits.

Anyway, hope you all took a moment to thank Him, and our veterans, for your freedom during the holiday.

Picnics, parties and parades are all wonderful activities.  They build memories and relationships, enriching our lives.  However, on this day, my thoughts turn to the Declaration of Independence, an inspired document designed to set the course of a new free Republic.

Forty-five years ago, I was on night guard duty after twelve hours of work on a surgical team, in Pieiku, Vietnam.  At midnight, the sky was lit up by hundreds of flares, including three from me and more from my fellow guards in celebration of our countries' birthday.  I was proud to be an American GI, in harms' way, serving my country to the best of my ability.

I'm still proud to be an American, though I am no longer naive enough to believe our Government serves US.  Rather, we serve IT.  That was never the intent of our Founding Fathers and I believe it is a trend that must be reversed if we are to survive as a nation.

Happy Fourth of July!  Think about your freedom and do something about it.  Get involved."

RaNae suggested a memorable event, so here goes.

I was asked about 4 weeks ago by my sister if I would drive a 26' U-haul to Anchorage for her daughter, who is moving there with her husband and family.  It sounded like a good, all expense paid trip, to Alaska, so I said "yes"!  Driving at 4 a.m. 5 of the six days, we got there last Friday, knocking out 2805 miles.  Two of the days we drove 600 miles.  That number of miles aren't difficult to knock out on a U.S. freeway, but Canadian 1-laners, it was tough driving.

Just this past Monday the wife and I went on a cruise in the western end of Prince William Sound to see the glaciers.  We took a shuttle bus from Anchorage about 90 miles to Whittier, then boarded a monster catamaran powered by two big diesel engines running jet pump drives. It was a real nice boat and had no problem clicking along at 31 knots, or around 35 mph.  The tour we went on would put us in sight, and up real close, to 26 glaciers.  We were able to see calving, or breaking off of the ice and falling into the water.  The boat captain sat us within about 100 yards of the glacier face.  It was quite a sight, and noisy when the ice broke loose. Besides the glaciers, we saw many sea otter, 6 seals laying on a sheet of ice, and two whales!  One of them rolled up to the surface and dove down exposing it's tail fin, or caudal fin, as it is called.  Quite a sight!

On our way across British Columbia on the Alcan Highway, we saw 13 black bears, one was a brown phase black bear, Stone ram sheep, big bull moose still growing antler, 3 sizeable herds of  Wood Bison (different from the plains bison), with alot of new calves, and an adult black wolf!  All of these critters were either on the road or real close to it. By that I mean 20 feet!  I would stop, get out of the van, walk to the edge of the road, the bear would look at me, and go back to eating grass!  I was real careful when I did all this stupid stuff!!  The early morning starts put us on the roads when most of the car traffic was still sleeping, so the animals were still out doing their thing. It was a good trip, but I will never drive that road again with anything but a car.

That's out trip in review.  Phillips was the name of the glacier tour company.  Y'all be safe!!

Thank you Gene for a great story.  That's what I'm talking about..... share something about you, so we can all get to know each other better.  We all have many stories, can't live this many years and not have experienced a lot.

I've heard some real horror stories about the Alcan Highway through the years.  Good thing Gene was a professional driver to cover that many miles with a long trailer over that road.

Pat Turman, born May 10, 1943 passed away at home in Inkom, ID on Saturday July 6 surrounded by family & friends.  She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dennis, daughters Tamara "Tami" Madsen (Sheldon), Michelle "Missy" Smith (Jay), 1 granddaughter, 1 grandson & grand-daughter-in-law, 4 great-grandchildren, siblings Velma John (Debbie), Sharon, Pat & CarlaDee, and many more cherished family members and friends.  Worked at Pocatello Children's Clinic for 43 years.

Heartfelt thanks to all family, friends, medical support team & Heritage Home Health & Hospice for helping our family during this journey.  Pat loved you all!

A celebration of Pat's life will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Inkom Park Pavilion from 12:00 - 4:00 PM.  Lunch will be served.
